Once you have given the fluid, your child should remain in the "enema position" for five to ten minutes. This forms a "plug" and prevents the enema fluid from leaking out of your child's bottom. Use 20 to 25 cc (ml) of water to inflate the balloon once the catheter is in the rectum. Once you insert the catheter, inflate the balloon at the end of the catheter. These two positions are most effective for giving enemas because they allow the fluid to be instilled easily into the colon by taking advantage of gravity. To deliver an enema, place your child on their side or stomach with their knees pulled up under their chest with their bottom in the air. Your child's doctor will tell you how much fluid to deliver when you give the enema to your child as well as the amount of any other ingredient needed.This tube is approximately 4 inches long. You will deliver the enema through a soft silicon tube (known as a Foley catheter), which you can easily insert into your child's rectum.Take the recommended amount of saline prescribed by your doctor and mix in the recommended ingredients.Dissolve 1 teaspoon of table salt in 1 liter (1000 cc or ml) of water to make the correct concentration of saline.Sometimes it is necessary to add glycerin, castile soap or phosphate to the enema solution to produce a satisfactory bowel movement. The doctor will give you specific guidelines for your child's enema. We prefer normal saline enemas, which can be mixed at home. If you are on Coumadin, discuss this with the nurse or doctor.You may resume taking your medications after you are able to eat. Insulin or oral diabetic medications should not be taken on the morning of your test.If you have any questions, please call the office. Bring your medications or a list of your medications. If you are taking blood pressure or heart medications, be sure to take them with a small amount of water on the morning of your procedure.If you do not have a driver, your test will be rescheduled to a day when one is available. You can expect to be here for 2 to 3 hours. You will be sedated and you will have to have someone available to listen to the doctor’s advice upon discharge and drive you home after the test. You may continue your clear liquid diet until 4 hours prior to your arrival time.Two hours before leaving to come to your appointment, repeat the Bag Emema process three (3) times.We may be contacted starting at 7:00AM if you have any questions.Do not eat or drink anything after midnight, except as noted below.Returns from the prep should be a yellow or green liquid, unless you have had red Jell-O, and then it may be red. If at any time during the prep you notice excessive bleeding (3 tablespoons or more), stop the prep and call our office.Remove the tube and sit on the toilet to allow the water to come out. Try to hold as much water in as you can take. Allow all of the water from the bag to empty slowly. Stand in your Shower and gently, insert the tube rectally.Place a towel on the floor between your toilet and shower to catch any water that may fall. Be careful not to make the water too cold or hot. Drink as many clear fluids as possible during the day – hydrating will help reduce side effects such as cramping or nausea. take 2 Dulcolax Tablets. Do not chew or crush them. Continue clear liquids all day, even after the prep.Start clear liquid diet (Sat-Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed-Thur-Fri) Drink one bottle of Magnesium Citrate at 6:00p.m.Start low residue diet (Sat-Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed-Thur-Fri) Go to a laboratory and have your lab work done if requested. Go to the pharmacy and purchase one (1) bottle of Magnesium Citrate, two (2) Dulcolax Tablets, and one (1) Bag Enema. If you are on Coumadin be sure to discuss this with the nurse to determine whether you need lab work prior to the procedure to adjust the dosage of this medication. Also, arthritis type Medications other than Tylenol or Celebrex should be stopped. Stop taking fiber, such as Metamucil vitamins iron nutritional supplements herbal products any products that contain olestra (in non-fat potato chips) fish oil (may also be called Lovaza) and Alli.
